Leading Earth Day on Campus

by Peyton Spangler, TCU Social Work student, Campus Organizer for MOVE Texas

Planning this year's Earth Day event was an incredible experience! Collaborating with several other amazing organizations, our goal was to highlight TCU’s environmental-focused orgs and climate-friendly efforts.  Click here for photos

As the chapter president for MOVE TCU, a student org dedicated to voter registration and civic engagement, I am passionate about advocating for climate justice and encouraging students to get involved. Education surrounding climate justice is a major issue that MOVE Texas focuses on. Earth Day was the perfect opportunity to connect with the campus community and show students what they can do to promote sustainability.

The turnout for the event was fantastic! We had many students, faculty, and staff stop by to see all the organizations involved. Our fair featured groups like RxPLORE, Re-Frog, and Tree Campus that allow students to be involved in green efforts at TCU. We also worked with student organizations like TCU Environmental Club, Frogs for Wildlife, and One Shade Greener, which give students the opportunity to join clubs focused on environmental issues and sustainability. TCU has many opportunities to get involved in environmental justice, and I’m glad we got to highlight some of these organizations!

In addition to showcasing these organizations, MOVE TCU offered voter registration—an important way to make our voices heard when it comes to environmental policies. We also handed out small pots with seeds to encourage students to grow their own microgreens at home!

We are so grateful to have been a part of such an amazing event and to have connected with so many environmentally friendly orgs and people! As MOVE TCU continues to grow, we hope to host even more climate-justice events and educate students in the many ways they can make a difference. Keep an eye out for future events on our Instagram @movetxtcu.
