Being Outdoors with Shadow
by Faith van Haaster
I LOVE dogs. They are so pure, act as an endless source of happiness, and they help me explore the outdoors! Recently, I have been dog sitting for an adorable German Shepherd puppy named Shadow. Shadow is full of energy, excitement, and an eagerness to go on adventures. Together, we seek long walks along trails, sunshine, and making the most out of a beautiful day outside! Prior to dog sitting Shadow, I didn’t spend much time outdoors enjoying nature or going on walks as a form of self-care; I spend a lot of time outdoors rowing, but that can sometimes be more stressful than fun. Hanging out with Shadow has helped me reconnect with parks, lakes, and even just spending time in the backyard while unplugging from the outside world.
A research study conducted by the National Institute of Health demonstrated that increasing sun exposure by just 10-15 minutes a day can boost serotonin and vitamin D levels immensely, and I definitely think I’m feeling those results! Overtime, I have noticed a decrease in my overall stress levels, a transition to a more positive mindset, and a healthier sleep schedule. Moreover, I am grateful that I have Shadow as an outlet during nursing school. He has made the stressful time of finding a job, buying a car, finding an apartment, and studying for NCLEX much more bearable. From taking study breaks to play with the tennis ball, to late nights where he keeps me company while I study, Shadow has been a strong source of love and support! Having Shadow in my life has shown me the importance of having an outlet as a nurse and the significant impact it can have on my mental and physical health. Moving forward, I am going to seek out another outlet post-graduation that encourages me to spend time with nature when I am working in Dallas. However, I will 1000% be making a lot of trips to visit Shadow and boost my serotonin levels:)
